These Waffles are a Win for Everyone

A healthy waffle recipe for kids that tastes great and is super easy to make? Now that sounds like the kind of breakfast plan every parent needs on a Saturday morning.

If your kids are anything like mine, you probably spend most Saturday mornings making something a little bit extra special for them to enjoy on their day off from school. Not only out of the goodness of your heart, but also to stock up for the week so that you can avoid school-morning meltdowns over what to eat for breakfast.

And if your kids have taste buds like my children’s, that Saturday morning special/stock up breakfast is usually muffins, pancakes or waffles.

But if you are a parent like me, you are determined to make breakfast for your kids without any processed sugar, no matter how small the amount. Because you know how much sugar they will already encounter throughout the day.

Which means you are in the right place, because the sweetener in these healthy waffles is maple syrup instead of white table sugar. So you can start your kids’ day off with a completely processed-sugar-free breakfast.

And your kids won’t even know. Because these really are just delicious Belgian waffles. Top them with some honey-sweetened strawberry jam, fresh fruit, naturally sweetened chocolate, more maple syrup or even honey-sweetened whipped cream to make them totally irresistible 😋

Yeah, your kids will probably be begging for these every weekend from now on. But that’s okay because they are so easy to make! Simple ingredients with simple instructions..

My kids and I love pancakes, but these waffles are more filling and easier to cook than pancakes. You don’t have to become a master at flipping to make waffles. And, depending on your waffle iron, you might be able to make more at a time than you can with pancakes. Which means you can also be done cooking a lot sooner. Another win!

But When Else Can You Make These Waffles?

Maybe Saturday mornings aren’t your thing when it comes to preparing a meal for your kids.

Maybe it’s your day off and you don’t want to cook breakfast. Or maybe you have work to do and don’t have time to cook breakfast. Maybe your kids have places to be and you just can’t squeeze it in on a Saturday morning.

Well then, you will just have to make these waffles on a weekday afternoon. And that is just fine because these easy waffles make a great after-school-snack for kids.

Or, you can make them in the evening so they are ready to go with your child to school for breakfast or morning snack time. Since they don’t take long to make, you can easily whip up a batch or two between the kids bedtime and yours.

Honestly, the first time I made these Belgian waffles, I was surprised at how quickly they were done. I thought I would be standing there babysitting breakfast for a half hour like when I make pancakes. But waffles truly are so much quicker.

And while fresh waffles are pretty amazing, my kids are just as happy to eat waffles that are one, two, three or ten days old! Just put them in the fridge in an airtight container to keep them fresh. Then, when your miniature human wants a waffle, warm it up in the microwave for soft or the toaster for crunchy.

Don’t worry if you can’t make waffles for breakfast on a Saturday morning. Make them whenever you can and pull them out of the fridge or freezer on Saturday morning … And every other morning 🙂

Ingredients

  • Eggs: Eggs bind everything together in these waffles and contribute a decent amount of protein. I use farm-fresh eggs when available and organic or cage-free when I have to buy from the store.
  • Butter: Butter helps with flavor and fluffiness. It is difficult to get a good fluff without butter. I use Irish grass-fed or organic butter.
  • Milk: Milk is the liquid in this waffle recipe. I use organic whole milk.
  • Maple Syrup: Waffles need just a little bit of sweetness to balance out their flavor. Instead of white table sugar, these waffles use maple syrup for a healthier alternative. I usually get my maple syrup from Costco. Any maple syrup will do, but make sure you have genuine pure maple syrup and not an imitation.
  • Flour: Any all-purpose flour will work. I get organic unbleached flour from Costco.
  • Baking Powder: Waffles need a good boost from baking powder in order to rise and fill out. Make sure you have aluminum-free baking powder.
  • Salt: Just the right amount of salt balances out the flavor in this waffles recipe.

Substitutions & Tips

  • Add a little extra flavor to these easy homemade waffles by throwing in some blueberries, strawberries, chopped nuts or homemade chocolate chunks. Note that if you add fruit to the batter, you will need to cook the waffles a little longer to account for the extra liquid they contain.
  • You could probably substitute the maple syrup in this recipe with an equal amount of honey if you want to.
  • Make sure to spray your waffle iron with your choice of oil spray to prevent the waffles from sticking. This is a good idea even with a no-stick waffle iron.
