Chocolate Bananas – A Super Simple Treat
There is no simpler treat than this frozen chocolate covered banana recipe. And with zero refined sugar, a dairy-free option and no questionable or processed ingredients, I would even dare to call this chocolate covered fruit a snack. An extra easy snack!
Making chocolate dipped bananas might even be too easy to need a recipe … Except for two common problems with making chocolate dipped fruit.
First of all, melting chocolate can be tricky. It might sound super simple to heat chocolate up and watch it melt, but there are numerous mistakes that can result in a chocolate melting fail.
Heating the chocolate too quickly in the microwave or over direct heat on the stove (or neglecting to stir the chocolate often enough) can result in burning or seizing. Accidentally allowing even a small amount of water into the chocolate can cause it to seize. And failing to add a fat to baker’s chocolate can result in a dull, thick melted chocolate that doesn’t spread as well.
And second of all, many people automatically use chocolate chips when making something like a frozen chocolate covered banana recipe. But chocolate chips of full of refined sugar. Even chocolate baking bars are usually full of sugar or require you to add sugar to get the desired sweetness.
But my super easy frozen chocolate covered banana recipe does not require chocolate chips or added refined sugar – and no, it’s not made with cocoa powder either.
I use unsweetened baker’s chocolate bars that are 100% cocoa solids and cocoa butter. For a fat, I use either butter or coconut oil. And to sweeten it, I use raw, unfiltered honey, which is added after the chocolate cools slightly.
I also melt my chocolate over low heat in a glass bowl inside of a pot of simmering water. I never use the microwave because it’s too easy to overheat chocolate that way. And melting chocolate on the stove is just as easy.
So even though making chocolate frozen bananas is incredibly easy, it is also important to have a good recipe that explains how to make them in a way that ensures successfully chocolate dipped bananas 🙂
When to Serve Chocolate Covered Bananas
I have to be embarrassingly honest for a moment here and admit that I’ve been serving my daughter frozen chocolate bananas for breakfast lately. But seriously, if it gets my picky, junk-food-loving 8-year-old to eat a banana for breakfast? I’m totally okay with that 😀
So you won’t find me judging if you decide to make this frozen chocolate covered banana recipe as your kids’ breakfasts for the next few days. And if you “decorate” your sugar free chocolate covered bananas with chopped nuts, you’re even getting some protein into those little bodies first thing in the morning.
My daughter also looks forward to having frozen chocolate covered bananas for an after school snack or an energy-booster after a fun day out. I mean, really, when wouldn’t a kid want to eat dark chocolate covered frozen bananas?
But my favorite time to serve these healthy frozen chocolate covered bananas is anytime in the summer. Because even though kids notoriously love frozen treats all year long, hot days of fun in the sun are the perfect occasion to pull out a refreshingly cold snack that tickles the taste buds.
If you stay stocked up on these frozen chocolate covered bananas along with these refined sugar free strawberry popsicles, these fudgesicles, and these berry frozen yogurt bites, your summertime snack times with kids will go so much smoother!
I don’t know about your kids, but mine are much more content when there are plenty of delicious and nutritious snacking options available in the freezer on those hot days.
Ingredients
- Bananas: You want your bananas to be completely ripe but not overly ripe (preferably no brown spots). If the bananas are not ripe enough, they will be bitter instead of sweet. If they are too ripe, you may end up having to cut off brown spots and your end result won’t look as nice.
- Unsweetened Baker’s Chocolate: Baker’s chocolate is my favorite base for chocolate treats. In my opinion, unsweetened baker’s chocolate is superior to using chocolate chips because you get to pick your own sweetener to add – which means you can keep it healthier.
- Butter or Coconut Oil: Using butter – or coconut oil for a dairy-free version – is necessary to make the chocolate smooth and shiny instead of thick and clumpy. I prefer to use organic or grass-fed Irish butter or organic coconut oil.
- Raw Honey: Raw, unfiltered honey is my sweetener of choice when I’m making my own chocolate. Since it thickens when chilled, it helps keep the chocolate firm at room temp. I usually get Kevala raw, unfiltered honey in 3 pound containers from Amazon.
- Optional Toppings: If you want your frozen chocolate covered bananas to look pretty or have a bit of extra flavor, you can add toppings such as crushed freeze-dried fruits, chopped nuts or unsweetened coconut flakes.
Instructions
Step 1
Peel your bananas and cut them in half. Insert popsicle sticks into the flat end of each banana half. Place bananas on a parchment paper-lined plate and place in the freezer for two hours.
Step 2
Once bananas have completely frozen, prepare the chocolate. Melt unsweetened baker’s chocolate and butter over low heat in a double boiler or a glass bowl inside a pot of water.
Mix occasionally until everything has melted. Remove from heat.
Step 3
After allowing the chocolate to cool for a few minutes, add in the honey and mix thoroughly to combine.
Pour chocolate into a glass so the chocolate is deep enough to dip the bananas in.
Step 4
Dip each banana into the chocolate, turning and tilting as necessary to get the entire banana coated in chocolate.
Hold the dipped banana over the glass for a few seconds to allow excess chocolate to drip and to give the chocolate on the banana a chance to harden.
Step 5
If you are using toppings such as chopped nuts, crushed freeze-dried fruit or coconut flakes, spoon these over each freshly dipped banana right away before the chocolate hardens.
Step 6
Place dipped bananas back on the parchment paper-lined plate and return to the freezer for 10 minutes to fully harden chocolate before serving.
Store frozen chocolate covered bananas in an airtight container for up to one month.
Substitutions & Tips
- For the best finished result, use bananas that are completely ripe but not overly ripe. If they are overly ripe, you may end up cutting off brown spots which will not look nice in the end.
- If you are planning to use toppings, make sure to have these all ready to go in separate bowls before you begin dipping your bananas. The chocolate will harden quickly on the frozen bananas, so you need to put the toppings on immediately after dipping.
- It is helpful to wear gloves while dipping and decorating your frozen bananas. This keeps things less messy.
- When storing your chocolate dipped bananas in the freezer, place a piece of parchment paper in the bottom of your container so the chocolate does not stick to the bottom.
