Types of Natural Sweeteners for No Bake Treats

The type of sweetener you use for a kids no-bake treat depends on what you are making. To give you some guidance, here are some of the ways I prefer to use various natural sweeteners to make no bake treats for kids (you can also read my full article on using natural sweeteners here).

Date Paste

Image of dates

I love date paste because it is just fruit and because it is pretty versatile. I’ve used date paste in numerous baked and no-bake recipes successfully.

Often times when I’m making energy balls, I use date paste because it is the thickest of the natural sweeteners I use. Combine it with some oats, almond flour, chopped nuts or other dry ingredients to make it firm enough to roll into balls and you’re good to go.

Date paste is also great in frozen treats. It’s an ideal way to add sweetness without technically adding any sugar (natural or otherwise) since it’s just fruit. I often use date paste in frozen treats when I know honey would be too strong of a flavor, especially for kids who don’t like the taste of honey.

The benefit to using homemade date paste versus straight dates in recipes you are making in the blender is that you don’t end up with clumps of unblended dates. When you use date paste, it mixes into your frozen treat smoothly.

Raw Unfiltered Honey

My second favorite sweetener for making no bake treats for kids without refined sugar is raw, unfiltered honey. Although raw honey can vary in how thick it is (dependent on many factors), it is overall thicker than processed honey, making it easy enough to incorporate into something firm that does not need to be baked.

You can pair honey with Irish grass-fed butter and keep no-bake treats refrigerated in order to help them harden. Raw honey also works well in frozen treats when you don’t need to worry about firmness.

It’s also great to use with melted unsweetened baker’s chocolate which hardens when chilled (depending on the honey-chocolate ratio) and even remains firm at room temperature if the amount of chocolate is very dominant.

Maple Syrup

I love maple syrup for its potent sweetness in cooked and baked treats. But it can be a challenge to use maple syrup in no bake treats because it is so liquid. Generally, we want no-bake treats to be firm enough to handle or at least not be mushy.

When it comes to frozen treats, maple syrup is a good option since consistency does not matter. And using maple syrup is a great way to intensely sweeten frozen treats with small amounts and without adding too much flavor.

Maple syrup can also be used for non-frozen no bake treats, but it will usually need to be combined with another sweetener or enough dry ingredients to soak up the liquid. Or, you can use maple syrup in no bake recipes that are firmed up another way such as with gelatin. This is the case with the gummies recipe below.

How to Store No Bake Treats

No bake treats are a little different than baked treats. Since they have not had moisture and bacteria baked out, they generally need to be kept refrigerated for preservation purposes.

Aside from that, a lot of no bake treats also need to either be refrigerated or kept frozen to maintain their form. Chilling gives a lot of ingredients more body.

Many no-bake treats can alternatively be frozen to preserve them longer. And the thaw time is usually pretty short. This is great for when you want to batch-make no-bake treats for several weeks ahead or just to pull out anytime you need a healthy treat for kids.

Planning Out No Bake Treats

No bake treats are usually low-effort and they also generally require less time in the kitchen to make. But that doesn’t mean you never have to plan for making them.

While some no-bake treats require little or no planning as long as you have all the ingredients, some treats must be made in advance or have certain elements that must be made in advance.

For example, frozen treats obviously must be made ahead of time so that they have adequate time to freeze before serving.

For popsicles, I like to make them in the evening so that they are ready to eat by morning. Since they are a larger frozen treat, they often take several hours to fully freeze completely (Yes, I have watched my daughter’s popsicle collapse onto the floor when we tried eating them too soon).

For something small like frozen yogurt bites – especially if they are made with frozen fruit to start with – the freeze time may only be a couple of hours. In that case, they can be made in the morning and be ready to serve as a snack by afternoon.

For other treats that must be chilled but not frozen, they usually need anywhere from a half hour to a couple of hours to chill. So you could make those no-bake treats any time of the day to enjoy just an hour or two later.

For example, treats that are made with baker’s chocolate that needs to harden in cold temperatures can usually be chilled for about an hour in the fridge or a half hour in the freezer to set. Other treats like gummies need 1-2 hours, depending on how much patience your kids have 🙂

Or, treats made with soft or melted butter that needs to re-harden (like the rice Krispie treats below) often need a couple of hours in the fridge or an hour in the freezer to firm up. These kinds of treats can also be enjoyed a1-2 hours after being made.

Regardless of how long no-bake treats for kids need to chill, they usually still require minimal time actively working in the kitchen. The amount of time they require for chilling is dormant time that you can be doing other things.
