This homemade muddy buddies puppy chow recipe is a healthy yet delectable alternative to the traditional muddy buddies that is full of refined sugar. Sweetened with honey, this puppy chow without powdered sugar or chocolate chips is so flavorful, kids don't even know it's healthy. The perfect chocolate and peanut butter treat for Thanksgiving, Christmas or other celebratory gatherings.
To a small-medium pot on the stove, add all ingredients except rice squares and arrowroot. Heat on low, stirring constantly until everything is melted and fully combined. Turn off heat.
To a large bowl, add rice squares.
Pour chocolate mixture on top of rice squares.
Using a large wooden spoon, thoroughly mix until all rice squares are evenly coated in the chocolate.
Cover and chill in the fridge until chocolate is completely cooled, about 15-20 minutes.
Once puppy chow has chilled, pour arrowroot powder over the top and mix thoroughly until all the puppy chow is evenly coated. Add extra arrowroot powder if desired to achieve your ideal whiteness.
Store in an airtight container or a sealable bag on the counter for up to 5 days or in the fridge for 2 weeks.
Notes
Arrowroot powder is optional and mostly for the purpose of making the puppy chow white without using powdered sugar. You can omit it if you don't mind having your puppy chow brown in appearance.
It is important to chill your puppy chow sufficiently before adding the arrowroot. If the chocolate is still warm when you add it, the arrowroot powder will mix into the chocolate instead of leaving a white coating on top.
