A classic French toast recipe that does not require you to have stale bread, this easy homemade breakfast for kids is simple and satisfying. Perfect for when you want a refined sugar free French toast that's a kid-win every time.
Crack the egg into a flat-bottomed bowl and whisk until the yolk and egg white are fully combined.
Add milk, maple syrup and vanilla extract to the bowl and whisk to combine.
Working one at a time, soak the bread slices for 5-8 seconds on each side and place on a plate until ready to fry.
Preheat your frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the butter to melt. Once butter is melted, place soaked bread pieces on the pan to fry for a couple of minutes until golden brown. Flip and fry until golden brown on the other side.
Serve with maple syrup, berries, homemade whipped cream or other desired toppings. Once cooled, store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Notes
If you plan ahead the night before you want to make French toast, you can set your bread slices out on a plate, uncovered, to get stale overnight. If you are making the recipe last-minute, simply toast your bread slices slightly to dry them out.
Be careful not to soak your bread slices too long. They will continue to absorb liquid as they sit on the plate and will be soggy and falling apart. I've found 5-8 seconds to be the perfect amount of time for typical sandwich bread (both white and whole grain).
I find it works the best to use a frying pan that can fry 4 slices of bread at a time. If you use a smaller pan that requires you to fry up the toast in more than two batches, you will probably end up need to wipe out the pan in between batches to get rid of butter than is starting to burn.
